In the six years the AACTA awards have run Hugo Weaving has been nominated three times for best supporting actor. Rounding out the nominations is Maggie Naouri who plays Canberra law student Anu Singh, who killed her boyfriend in Joe Cinque’s Consolation. Nominations for the best lead actress include Maeve Dermody for her role as a bookshop clerk in Pawno, Teresa Palmer who stars alongside Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge as love of his life Dorothy Schutte and Odessa Young for her portrayal of the bright, inquisitive teenage daughter Hedvig in The Daughter. Pawno producer, writer and actor Damien Hill is nominated for his role as lovelorn Danny Williams along with John Brumpton for his portrayal of old-timer Les Underwood, who runs the pawn shop. Garfield is up against Fremantle-raised, WAAPA-trained star Ewen Leslie who starred in The Daughter as timber worker Oliver Finch. In the best lead actor category, Andrew Garfield is nominated for his portrayal of conscientious objector and army medic Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge. Ivan Sen, who was nominated in the third AACTA awards for Mystery Road, is a nominee for his follow-up film, Goldstone. Rosemary Myers is also nominated in the category of best director for her feature- film debut Girl Asleep along with Bentley Dean and Martin Butler for Tanna.
It would also be his third AACTA award, winning best lead actor in 1981 for Gallipoli and in 1979 for Tim when the accolades were known as the AFI awards (the inaugural AACTA awards were in January 2012). Mel Gibson is nominated for best director and if he wins it will not be the first time his directing skills have been recognised by his peers - he won the Academy Award for best director for Braveheart in 1996. They are The Daughter, Hacksaw Ridge, WA’s CinefestOZ film prize winner and quirky coming-of-age story Girl Asleep, the tale of crime and corruption in the outback Goldstone and a story of loyalty and a forbidden love affair enacted by the Yakel tribe, Tanna.
